Mr. Winston was a formative figure in my wife’s faith development. He was the man who oversaw Sunday School at her small, conservative, Southern Baptist church.

He truly loved kids, always having candy in his pocket, making sure the annual Easter egg hunt was a success, and making sure that no one was ever in need.

Mr. Winston was also the guy who’d take the church van to pick up children when their parents couldn’t or didn’t attend church. Every time he’d pick up those kids for church, he’d hand them a stick of Juicy Fruit gum.

When we attended the visitation before Mr. Winston’s funeral, we were not surprised when we saw a floral spray consisting entirely of Juicy Fruit gum, wrappers, and packaging.

Never underestimate the power of a small action when it is rooted in love…
